The always epic Paris Fashion Week, slightly overshadowed by the robbery of Kim Kardashian’s jewellery, came to an end this week and now it’s time to sum up the 7 biggest catwalk trends.
Glittering 80s
Paris catwalks were positively glimmering as shiny vinyl fabrics strike a pose. From skirts and jackets to 1980s off the shoulder tops (as shown at Kenzo) gold and silver rock-lux is back. A shiny patent coat should be top of any want list for Spring, and no one did it better than Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent.
Transparent fashion
We can count on one hand the number of designers who didn’t add something sheer to their collection. Yes, Spring/Summer 2017 is the season of see-through dresses and tops, with most of the catwalk offerings banning the bra. In a step up, Chanel channel a real underwear to outerwear vibe where some form of the lingerie dress ran through their entire collection.
Bling, Bling
Kim Kardashian better stock up on new jewels now because 2017 is set to be all about the bling. Saint Laurent’s Vaccarello said he was flirting with a bit of flashy “bad taste”, with YSL encrusted on stilettos while Dior unashamedly slapped its “J’adore Dior” slogan bags, belts and sandals. The Dior move, however, was probably quite strategic in also showing that there really is no Saint Laurent without the Yves. Chanel matched baseball caps with chunky bling rings, if it wasn’t Chanel it would be positively tacky. Close call there.
Pink makes the boys wink
London and New York were all about the citrus colours (proclaiming that pink stinks) but the Parisians know how to nail chic with an offering of pale ivories and blushes. Valentino and Nina Ricci used pinks in their homage to lingerie dresses, while Celine used pink in two edgy oversized toga dresses. The look was purposelessly feminine but pink was also strongly evident in bold fuchsias and even neon.
Fashionable cold shoulder
Goods news if you jumped on the summer 2016 trend for one shoulder fashion because it’s set to extend its welcome into 2017. Mugler and Marant have taken the one-shoulder we know and love and exaggerated with 80s puff and frill. Think of puff ball sleeves and metallic pleating on your one covered shoulder.
Feel for heels
Remember when Victoria Beckham told us to throw away our heels? Turns out that she only meant for a season. Sorry, but those flat kicks that you’ve been living in all year are being stomped out by 8cm heels at Chloe. Most designers followed suit with skyscrapers so high they would surely be conducive to a wobble (or, at least, blisters).
Strong Slogans
Not exactly new, the slogan trend has been around for too long now but it’s been pimped up by Stella McCartney in dresses emblazoned with “Thanks Girls”. Not exactly high-fashion, and more the kind of discourse best left in WhatsApp groups. YOLO.
